So grade five was traumatic” (unpublished interview [Ross]). But, in retrospect, Alice says, In this way, I got this look at a big range of society. I was always an outsider and you just couldn’t ask for a better beginning for a writer …. see[ing] such a big range of people and attitudes and even language by the time I was seven. This is something that you absorb. You use it for your survival when you’re a child …. I think this is very important, very useful, for a writer. Mind you, it’s fairly difficult for a person.

As Alice the writer gets older, the mother in the stories goes from old age and paralysis to youth, until, in “Friend of My Youth,” a time is recovered from before her marriage when she is a hopeful young schoolteacher. Housekeeping The writing about all this came later. At the time, practical responses to her mother’s illness were required of Alice. By 1944, when she entered the Wingham and District High School, Alice, as older daughter, had taken over the mother’s role in the house. Male and female roles were then very clearly defined, as they are depicted as being in “Boys and Girls” (Dance), with men outside doing heavy and dangerous work and women inside doing housework.

She deliberately used her correct schoolteacher grammar, which set her speech apart from the rural accent of Huron county. She joined the Book-of-the-Month Club, and acquired a set of good dishes and some pieces of antique furniture. Not able to afford real rugs, she painted the linoleum black with a red-and white border to make it look more like a rug (then she got carried away and painted “the red and white V-for-victory sign in the middle because it was during the war” [“Interview” (Hancock) 100]).
